How to Care for Your Skin in Your 50’s

senior skin careTurning fifty can do a lot for your body and your emotional mindset. Not only are you now really considered to be middle aged but certain aspects of your life are probably very different: kids are grown up, your career is settling down, and you may be ready to even downsize your house. And although all of these changes can really impact your life, bodily changes can really throw you for a loop— especially in regards to your skin. If you have just turned fifty and have started to notice that your skin isn’t what it used to be, then you need to start a new skincare regimen that consists of the following:

Anti-Aging Products
Yes, you might think that anti aging products are just a hoax claiming to give you results that are merely impossible. However, anti aging products that contain ingredients like retinol are proven to help slow the aging process and reduce the overall appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Simply look for both eye creams and skin creams with anti-aging ingredients in them and start to use them both morning and night, or as directed.

Moisturize
Unfortunately, the older you get, the more dry your skin becomes, especially due to things such as hormonal changes brought on by menopause. If you used to get away with rarely moisturizing your skin or by using something like a serum, then this may be big news for you, but switching to something like a heavy day cream and night cream will help to ensure that your skin locks in the moisture it needs in order to look and feel good all day long.

Sunscreen
Just because you are now middle aged, doesn’t mean that you should stop taking preventative measures to protect your skin from damage caused by things like the sun. As one of the best ways to ensure that your skin stays protected, wear a sunscreen on your face and hands everyday. And if you are going somewhere where your skin will be exposed to the elements for an extended amount of time, make sure to lather up your entire body with a sunscreen.

Turning fifty is a right of passage and learning to take the best care of your skin as possible will help to ensure that when you turn sixty, you look just as fabulous as today. To learn more about skincare routines or to schedule an appointment with Dr. Thomas F. Crais, contact our office today!
