What is a face lift?
A face lift is a cosmetic surgery procedure that addresses skin that has wrinkled, sagged, and drooped due to aging, gravity, and other factors. Face lifts also can remedy deep creases in the corners of the nose and mouth, as well as jowls in the jaw line. A face lift can take years off your appearance.
What is a subperiosteal face lift?
A subperiosteal face lift vertically lifts the soft tissues of the face. During the procedure, the soft tissues are remolded and repositioned appropriately at the level of the natural bones in the face. This technique is becoming more and more popular because it provides longer-lasting results, especially when combined with standard face lift methods.
Who are the best candidates for a subperiosteal face lift?
The best candidates for subperiosteal face lifts are those who have good skin tone, meaning their skin can adjust well to the manipulations made during surgery. Patients who have deep nasolabial creases, jowls, and significant sagging in the cheeks are also perfect for a subperiosteal face lift.
Conversely, patients who have excessive fat in areas of the face and have moderate or severe skin laxity in the neck may not be good candidates for a pure subperiosteal face lift. In these cases, a combination of facial surgeries may be needed. Smokers also may not achieve optimum results from a face lift.
What happens during a subperiosteal face lift?
During a subperiosteal face lift, the incision is made either in the forehead, the jaw line, or in the midface. Once the incision is made, the skin and soft tissues are lifted in a vertical direction or a superolateral approach. Sutures are used to maintain the desired position of the soft tissues.
What should I expect after a subperiosteal face lift?
Any swelling and discomfort in the treated areas can be alleviated with the application of iced saline compresses. Antibiotics may be prescribed, as well. The dressings placed on the treated areas can usually be removed one day after the procedure. An adhesive tape may be applied to the area for a few days after face lift surgery to minimize swelling.
